01 / THE CONTEXT

First, the context.

THE VOTEME TAKE

Four guilty verdicts are accountability for Russell Brand. They are not a gold star for workplaces where concerns failed to travel, complaints were mishandled or staff believed a star would always get his way.

On November 5, a Southwark Crown Court jury convicted Russell Brand of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault against four women. The Metropolitan Police says the offences occurred from 2004 to 2009 and that its investigation drew on more than 100 witnesses, over 400 witness statements and more than 1,400 documents. Brand, who denied ever having non-consensual sex, was acquitted of two other rape counts and one count of attempted indecent assault. He is due to be sentenced on November 9. The mixed verdicts settle the seven charges put to this jury; they do not settle the separate question of how celebrity power operated around him. Reuters reports that three of the four women connected to the convictions worked in media and that some witnesses said Brand's stature made them fear they would not be believed or could damage their careers. The institutional record predates the verdict. Channel 4's March 2024 review found no evidence that the channel knew the specific allegations later aired by Dispatches while Brand presented its programmes, but it also found that a serious 2009 complaint from a staff member was not properly investigated or escalated. A January 2025 BBC review similarly found that some staff felt unable to raise concerns, believing Brand would get his way, and that a 2007 complaint was not handled effectively. Friday's unpopular take is not that a criminal conviction means nothing. It is that one man's conviction cannot be repackaged as proof an industry corrected itself. Policies may be stronger now. The accountability test is whether the next worker can report powerful talent without needing a documentary, a public scandal and years of litigation before the institution listens.

02 / THE POINTS OF VIEW

Unclench · the unpopular take

A conviction can be real accountability and evidence the system arrived late.

WHAT THE SOURCES SAY

  • The CPS and Metropolitan Police confirm that the jury convicted Brand of one rape and three sexual assaults; sentencing is scheduled for November 9.
  • The same jury acquitted Brand of two rape counts and one attempted indecent-assault count, a mixed verdict this dispatch preserves rather than flattening.

OUR READING · INTERPRETATION

VoteMe's interpretation: the verdict matters precisely because the women were heard in court and the prosecution proved four charges beyond a reasonable doubt. It is not cynical to call that accountability. It is cynical to stop the accountability clock there. When a case concerns conduct inside workplaces and around production staff, the institutions that supplied status, access and silence do not become supporting heroes because a jury eventually did its job.

Bullshit detector · the institutional record

“We have stronger policies now” is a claim. The real test is who can use them.

WHAT THE SOURCES SAY

  • Channel 4's own review says a serious 2009 complaint was not properly investigated or escalated, while finding no evidence that staff knew the specific allegations later aired by Dispatches during Brand's earlier presenting years.
  • The BBC's review found that some people felt unable to complain because they believed Brand would always get his way, and that one 2007 complaint was not dealt with effectively.

OUR READING · INTERPRETATION

VoteMe's opinion: a safeguarding policy is not a magic spell. It matters only if a junior worker can use it against profitable talent without becoming the workplace problem. The broadcasters say protections are stronger. Good. The bullshit detector stays on until power—not merely paperwork—has changed.

WHAT THE RECEIPTS CANNOT SETTLE

This dispatch reports the November 5 verdicts, not a sentence; sentencing is scheduled for November 9. Brand denied the charges and denied ever having non-consensual sex. The jury convicted him on four counts and acquitted him on three, and this story does not treat an acquittal as proof that an allegation was invented. It does not identify complainants, who have lifelong anonymity under UK law, or repeat unnecessary details of the offences. The Channel 4 and BBC findings concern their own institutional reviews and are not presented as findings of criminal liability. VoteMe does not claim every colleague or executive knew of criminal conduct, that current safeguards are ineffective, or that the conviction proves every separate allegation. “Gold star,” “supporting heroes,” “magic spell” and “bullshit detector” are labeled VoteMe jokes and interpretation. It is not arrest, trial, verdict or victim photography, and it does not depict the period of the offences.

HAWKE’S EYE · OPINION

A jury convicted the star. Fine. Now resist the industry fairy tale where everybody else discovers safeguarding just in time for the closing credits. A complaint that does not climb the org chart is not a reporting system; it is a suggestion box with legal stationery. Your opinion. No ass-kissing required.
